PG&E’s Black Hawk helicopter caps off a successful firefighting season in Butte County

The Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) closed its four-month contract for a Type 1 Black Hawk helicopter, based at the Chico Air Attack Base, to increase public safety in Butte County. The contract, approved by the Butte County Board of Supervisors, went into effect July 1 and was intended to support Butte County Fire Departments in fighting fires in unincorporated areas.

The Black Hawk, which could carry up to 800 liters of water, played a crucial role in preventing several initial attack fires from escalating into larger incidents. Cal Fire said this was the first aircraft on the scene of the Thompson Fire, which made numerous water drops just two days after it became operational. The helicopter also provided assistance during the park fire and supported initial and extended attack incidents in Lake and adjacent counties.

During the deployment, Cal Fire said the helicopter completed 36 missions, logged 71 flight hours and delivered 456 water drops, totaling 364,800 gallons.

“We are grateful for PG&E’s support of Butte County residents and firefighters this summer,” said Fire Chief Garrett Sjolund. “This helicopter was undoubtedly an effective tool, slowing the spread of fire, providing aerial reconnaissance and assisting with numerous local emergencies.”

The contract for the Black Hawk helicopter ended on Halloween, Thursday, October 31, ending service in Butte County.
