Second-seeded Australians Ellen Perez and Matt Ebden have claimed their first mixed doubles victory at Roland Garros, beating dangerous Spanish duo Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marcel Granollers 6-3 6-4 on Monday.

“Anytime you win matches at the Olympics it’s a good feeling,” said Perez, the world No. 10 in doubles.

“It’s always nice to get through the first one, just get some momentum. They were a good team, we did well at times, we were under pressure in the second and we were able to get that back.”

Ebden admitted the duo were not keen, as Granollers is currently the number one doubles player.

“Granollers is one of the best doubles players and Sorribes Tormo, she won her women’s doubles match earlier. I think we played very well,” Ebden said.

“Ellen literally lit it up from start to finish. Well done for putting your best foot forward at the Olympics, that’s why we’re here, to try and play our best at the best events, and there’s no better time to do it.”

In the quarter-finals, the Australian duo will face the winner, the Chinese duo Zheng Qinwen and Zhang Zhizhen, or Donna Vekic and Mate Pavic from Croatia.

“Both teams are doing a good job with the basics, making a lot of serves and returns,” Perez said. “I think it comes down to the guy who takes the lead in both scenarios.

Earlier on Monday, Alex de Minaur and Alexei Popyrin lost 6-2 6-3 in the first round of the men’s doubles to American number four Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram.

“It was good to be there with Alexei. We have literally shared every stage of our careers together,” De Minaur said.

“From playing in the under-10s to Tennis Europe to juniors to Junior Davis Cup, Futures, Challengers, everything, Davis Cup and the Olympics and especially becoming roommates at the Olympics, which was really fun.

“I’m just happy I could participate. I wasn’t sure I would get the chance to play.

“I enjoyed the athletes, the village, the opening ceremony, it was a surreal experience. I am very happy to have been part of it.”

Popyrin continues to fly the flag for Australia in the men’s singles, taking on three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in the second round on Tuesday.
