Penn State takes 12 on CSC At-Large Academic All-District Teams

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Twelve student-athletes from Penn State have been named to the CSC Academic All-District team, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.

Michael Artlip (men’s gymnastics), Brie Barraco (hockey), Christian Berger (men’s hockey), Phia Glaidieux (hockey), Levi Haines (wrestling), Grant Haus (men’s lacrosse), Ellie Hollie (women’s lacrosse), Tessa Janecke (women’s hockey) ), TJ Malone (men’s lacrosse), Arianna Proietti (women’s fencing), Kristin O’Neill (women’s lacrosse) and Matt Underhill (men’s gymnastics) were named Academic All-District.

Ten of the twelve nominees will advance to the CSC Academic All-America voting. The At-Large program includes student-athletes who participate in sports that do not have their own Academic All-America teams. Institutions can nominate up to six men and six women from the sports of beach volleyball, bowling, rowing, fencing, hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing and water polo.

To be eligible for nomination to the Academic All-America program, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, possess a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, in at least 50 percent of games of their team and must be starters or significant reserves with respectable athletic credentials.

Barraco, a graduate student with a 3.97 GPA in kinesiology, was a first-team NFHCA All-Region selection for the field hockey team. Barraco, a team captain for Penn State in 2023, had a 1.64 goals against average and 105 saves this year, helping the team to a 9-8 record. Barraco was a first-team NFHCA National All-Academic honoree, an NFHCA Scholar of Distinction and an Academic All-Big Ten selection.

Gladieux, a senior with a 3.86 GPA in education, was a first-team All-American for the field hockey team. Gladieux, who was the 2023 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, has also been named to the 2024 U.S. Olympic hockey team and will compete in the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. Gladieux had 45 points this year from 21 goals and three assists. In addition to first-team All-America and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year laurels, Gladieux was a first-team All-Big Ten, first-team NFHCA All-Region, Academic All-Big Ten, NFHCA National All- Academic selection and NFHCA Scholar of Distinction.

Hollin, a two-time All-American, has a 3.94 GPA in rehabilitation and human services after causing 21 turnovers and 21 ground balls this season. She held some of the best players in the country (Ava Angello, Elle Clevenger, Cassidy Spilis) to two goals each. Hollin was named All-Big Ten first team, USA Lacrosse All-America honorable mention and to the Big Ten All-Tournament team.

Janecke was named CCM/AHCA second-team All-American and USCHO second-team All-American after a career year. Her sophomore season included being named first-team All-CHA, CHA Player of the Year, and Forward of the Year, and finished the regular season as the league’s scoring champion after recording a career-high 16 goals and 36 assists for 52 points. In conference play alone, she totaled 35 points on 12 goals and tied a league-leading 23 assists. She was named CHA Forward of the Week four times and CHA Forward of the Month three times. She also scored two hat tricks this season against Lindenwood and Dartmouth. On the year, Janecke recorded a total of 53 points, which ranked eighth in the nation, while leading the nation in faceoff wins with 630 and ranking fourth in assists with 36. Janecke also became the fastest player in program history to reach 100 career points after scoring a goal against RIT in Game 2 of the CHA Tournament semifinals. She was also named a Top 10 Patty Kazmaier Award finalist for the first time in her career.

O’Neill, a three-time All-American, has a 3.86 GPA in marketing. She was second on the team in points with 52 of 45 goals and seven assists. She was first on the team with goals in the free position, proving to be one of the best in the country from eight yards with 23, finishing in third place. The midfielder was named All-Big Ten first team, USA Lacrosse All-America and Big Ten All-Tournament team this season. O’Neill finishes her fourth year with the team with 199 points and sixth all-time in goals with 164.

Proietti, a two-time NCAA national tournament qualifier for the Penn State women’s fencing team, carries a 3.94 GPA in management. Proietti will compete at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris after earning a spot on the Italian Olympic team in women’s fencing. Proietti is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and was a National Fencing Coaches Association honorable mention All-American in 2024.

Artlip, a 2024 CGA Regular Season All-American, has a 4.0 in electrical engineering. The Bellaire, Texas native was one of the few Nittany Lions to appear in all eight games this season. In the postseason, Artlip competed in the finals of the Big Ten Championships and NCAA Championships. He earned All-Big Ten first team honors in the all-around, floor and vault.

Berger finished his Nittany Lion career playing 129 consecutive games before an injury prematurely ended his senior season with six games remaining. Berger earned his finance degree in May with a cumulative GPA of 3.88. A three-time All-Big Ten and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar member, Berger finished his time in Hockey Valley ranked 10th on the all-time points list by a defenseman with 42, while his nine goals and 33 assists respectively put him at the ninth and 10th among all-time Nittany Lion defensemen. Berger scored six points with two goals and four assists in 30 games last season.

Wrestler Levi Haines, with a 3.67 GPA in agriculture, won the 2024 NCAA National Championship at 157 pounds for Penn State’s powerhouse wrestling program. Haines went 23-0 this season with five majors, five technical falls and five pins. In addition to his national title, Haines was the 2024 Big Ten champion, a first-team All-Big Ten honoree and an Academic All-Big Ten selection. Haines helped lead Penn State to the 2024 Big Ten Regular Season title, the 2024 Big Ten Championship and the 2024 NCAA National Championship, the team’s 11th in the last 13 tournaments.

Haus was named a second-team USILA Lacrosse, USA Lacrosse and Inside Lacrosse All-American. Haus was also named to the All-Big Ten second team. The native of Palmyra, Pennsylvania, has a 3.60 GPA in business administration. Haus scored goals at Ohio State and against Michigan this season. He finished the season with two goals and one assist, while causing four turnovers and scoring 27 ground balls.

Malone was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season after posting a career-high 78 points on 42 goals and 36 assists. Malone has a 3.79 GPA in business administration. He was named a USILA, Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse All-American for the second year in a row. He ranks third all-time in points (252 career points). Malone against Georgetown picked up his 100th career assist, putting him fourth all-time in assists. In 2024 alone, Malone had nine five-point plus games and 12 multi-goal games. He led the Nittany Lions during the regular season in points, assists and was tied for first in game-winning goals. He was also named a finalist for the Top 25 Tewaaraton Award.

Underhill competed in all eight competitions as a rings and vault specialist. The junior has a 3.94 GPA in finance. In the postseason, he was one of six Nittany Lions to advance to the Big Ten Championship finals. He placed sixth on the rings to the podium. At the NCAA Championships, Underhill was one of seven gymnasts to make the finals.

The CSC Academic Women’s At-Large Academic All-America team will be announced on July 16. The men’s team will be announced on July 17.
