PCB threatens to take legal action against allegations of match fixing

PCB is threatening to take action against people accusing the team members of match-fixing during the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Some YouTubers and journalists had accused the team’s leading players of match-fixing following the team’s poor performance.

The Pakistani team could not progress to the Super 8 stage of the World Cup after losing their matches to USA and India. A whirlwind of criticism of the team’s performance arose on social media.

PCB has dismissed the allegations and said none of the players are involved in any illegal activities. The ICC anti-corruption and security manager who accompanied the team kept a close eye on the players.

When contacted, PCB sources stated: “We are fully aware of these negative comments. Criticism within the boundaries of the game is acceptable and there is no objection to it. But unfounded accusations such as match fixing cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.”

Asked whether the board would initiate an investigation, the sources said, “PCB has no doubt about it, so why should we initiate an investigation? Those who made the accusations must provide evidence. We have instructed our legal department to send notices to such individuals and demand evidence. If this is not done, we will seek damages for defamation. A new law in Punjab will ensure that a decision will be made within six months.”

After Pakistani fast bowler Haris Rauf was involved in an altercation with a fan, members of the men’s national cricket team are keeping their distance from fans in the United States following their early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup.

According to The News, T20 captain Babar Azam, Shadab Khan and a few other players, who extended their stay in the US despite the team’s elimination in the league stage, have limited their public interactions and are only meeting people they know well.

This shift in the team’s approach to fans follows a widely shared video on social media of 30-year-old Rauf confronting a fan who made negative comments about him. In the video, Rauf, walking with his wife Muzna, becomes aggressive towards a fan who is accompanied by a group of youths. The footage shows Rauf running towards the fan, despite attempts by his wife and others to stop him.
