Pat Surtain II was the NFL’s highest paid cornerback for two days

Denver Broncos superstar Pat Surtain II signed the most expensive contract in NFL history for a cornerback on Wednesday.

That honor lasted exactly two days.

Miami Dolphins star Jalen Ramsey signed a new deal Friday worth $24.1 million per year, barely higher than Surtain’s $24 million per season. It was clearly a symbolic gesture from the Dolphins and Ramsey, taking the title away from Surtain.

Does this really matter to Surtain? Probably not. After all, he’s still guaranteed $77.5 million in his new deal, which is a generational luxury for him and his family.

But Ramsey, a seven-time Pro Bowl appearanceee and once the highest-paid cornerback, was eager to regain that honor from the Broncos’ young star.

At 24, you can bet that PS2 will be the big boss again once his next deal comes along, but that will be years away.

In three seasons with Denver, Surtain has made two Pro Bowls, thrown seven interceptions and defended 36 passes. He was selected No. 9 overall by the Broncos in the 2021 NFL Draft.

ESPN named him the best cornerback in the game this season, something players and media seem to agree on. For what it’s worth, Ramsey was fifth on ESPN’s list.

Now that the contract is up, you can bet PS2 wants to win. He’s never played in an NFL playoff game, or been on a team with a record over .500.

Let’s hope 2024 is the season where at least one of those things changes, and that Surtain doesn’t care that Ramsey makes $100,000 more per year than he does.
