SAINT-DENIS, France — The U.S. men’s and women’s 4×400-meter relay teams did more than just capture Olympic gold Saturday night.

They also ensured that Paris 2024 became the most successful Olympic Games for the American athletics federation in 40 years.

Shortly after 9 p.m., Rai Benjamin took the baton first on the final leg, holding off an attack from Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, who won the 200 meters on Thursday. He went on to win the men’s 4×400 meters relay in an Olympic record time of 2:54.43, 0.10 ahead of Tebogo.
