Paris 2024 Olympics: Simone Biles’ injury won’t stop Team USA from leading gymnastics qualifying events

Medal table | Olympic schedule | Olympic news

The 2024 Paris Olympics are underway, and Team USA’s women’s gymnastics team began qualifying on Sunday at the Bercy Arena. Simone Biles, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee and Hezly Rivera will be looking to return to the top in Paris after winning team silver at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The quintet started off strong, but not without a few missteps. Most notably, Biles injured her lower left leg while warming up for her floor exercise during Team USA’s second rotation.

Biles said it hurts to take off and at one point left the arena floor, but remained in the competition with a heavily taped ankle. She made a big misstep on her floor routine and needed a big step back to land her signature Yurchenko double pike on the vault, but left qualifying with a huge lead in the all-around standings.

Meanwhile, Lee narrowly edged out Chiles for the second American spot in the individual all-around final and will get a chance to defend her gold medal in Tokyo. The worst day was for Carey, who took a nasty fall on the floor exercise and will not get a chance to defend her own gold in the discipline.

The Americans were in the second subdivision of the day. Here is a look at the complete gymnastics schedule:

  • Women’s Qualifying: Division 1: 3:30 a.m. ET (Peacock)

  • Women’s Qualifying: Division 2: 5:40 a.m. ET (Peacock, E!)

  • Women’s Qualifying: Division 4: 12:00 PM ET (Peacock, E!)

  • Women’s Qualifying: Division 5: 3:10pm ET (Peacock, E!)

Live32 updates

  • Andrade just scored a 14.400 on the uneven bars, just shy of Simone Biles’ record of 14.433 on that apparatus. That followed a 14.683 on vault, bested only by Biles’ record of 15.300.

  • Australia and Brazil are currently completing the qualifications for women’s gymnastics in the fifth subdivision. Led by Rebeca Andrade, the Brazilians are likely to be the USA’s biggest rivals at the Games.

  • Team USA still leads after four subdivisions

With one division left in the qualifying round, the Americans are still in pole position and it’s not exactly exciting.

    1. United States (172,296)
    2. Italy (166,861)
    3. China (166,628)
    4. Japan (162,196)
    5. Canada (161,563)
    6. Great Britain (160,830)
    7. Romania (159,497)
    8. Netherlands (159,096)
    9. France (158,797)
    10. South Korea (152,496)

  • Team USA maintains big lead after two subdivisions

Team USA didn’t have the cleanest qualifying round, between Simone Biles’ injury and Jade Carey’s fall, but they have a huge lead with a 172.296 on the team standings after two subdivisions. China currently sits in second place with a 166.861.

Meanwhile, the top of the individual all-round rankings:

    1. Simone Biles, 59,566
    2. Sunisa Lee, 56,132
    3. Jordan Chiles, 56,065 (eliminated)
    4. Kaylia Nemour from Algeria, 55,966

Three more subdivisions to go. We’ll report back when the field is filled.

  • Suni Lee defeats Jordan Chiles to advance to all-around final

As a Team USA gymnast, you can be the third best in the world, but your teammates will knock you out. Suni Lee beats Chiles with a 14.866 on the beam and gets the chance to defend her gold medal.

Meanwhile, Simone Biles is busy loosening her ankle after a hard day’s work.

  • Simone Biles ends dramatic qualifying round strongly

The bars may be Biles’ worst event, but she looked great, nailing a difficult dismount for a score of 14.433. She was all smiles when she hit the mat… and then walked the wrong way. She should have a gap in the all-around once all the subdivisions are done.

Now it is Suni Lee who is fighting for her own all-round spot.

  • Here’s Biles’ first jump, via Lindsey Vonn

  • Jordan Chiles makes a strong all-around effort with a 14.266 on the bars

Suni Lee will basically have to perform perfectly here to defend her all-round gold in Tokyo.

  • Hezly Rivera to lead Team USA on the uneven bars

The 16-year-old rookie starts Team USA off strong with a 13.900. Cute: NBC showed a heart rate monitor for her father Henry, which was around 180 BPM

  • Biggest drama still: the battle for the second American all-round spot

Only two gymnasts per country are allowed to qualify for the individual all-around final. Biles will almost certainly take the top American spot. Second place will be Jordan Chiles vs. Suni Lee.

Chiles is on 41.799, while Lee is on 41.266. However, Lee could have the upper hand on the bars, where she won bronze in Tokyo.

  • Biles lands her second jump and then jumps off the podium on one foot

Biles is clearly in pain. She jumped off the podium with one foot and appears to be limping as she walks across the arena floor, but the jumps are all that matter. She scores a 14.800 for an overall score of 15.300, and she’s in good shape heading into Team USA’s final rotation, the uneven bars.

  • Biles scores a 15.800 on her first jump

Almost two points higher than any other jump. That. Will. Play

  • Simones Biles lands the Yurchenko double pike

NBC’s Laurie Hernandez: ‘I feel like throwing up’

Biles: Performs the most difficult trick in gymnastics with a taped ankle, taking a big step backwards.

    Hernandez: “Hooray.”

  • Jade Carey recovers from floor disaster with two amazing jumps, Simone Biles is next

Carey shakes off her bad fall on the floor routine with a 14.433 on vault, making it to the finals with a huge score that sends her mother into tears in the crowd.

    Next time: Simone Biles.

  • Suni Lee and Jordan Chiles remain solid on vault

Lee posts a 14.133 while Chiles has a 14.21. Both great scores. Jade Carey is next.

  • Here’s a portion of Biles’ floor routine, with her opening misstep omitted

  • Team USA now on the jump

With a taped ankle, it’s now time for Biles’ signature event: the vault. She’ll be doing two vaults, so we’ll see if the injury affects her.

  • Biles looks great

Other than throwing her left leg off the track on her first fall, Biles was just plain big. Either that ankle injury was much ado about nothing, or it was just an incredible amount of guts. You could hear her say, “I was looking through that routine like, ‘What the f*** was that.'”

She scored 14.600, again the best score of the day, and so far everything is going well, apart from the fact that Carey was unable to defend her gold medal.

  • Simone Biles now competes on the floor

With a heavily taped left ankle, Simone Biles takes the field. Carey received a 10.633.

  • Jade Carey trips badly on the floor, Biles returns

Jade Carey is a floorer for Team USA, but she just delivered a bad routine with a really bad fall, just as the mood was starting to change due to the uncertainty surrounding Biles. Carey is unlikely to make it to the floor finals, while Biles is back on the arena floor.
