India’s Aruna Tanwar suffered a heavy 0-19 defeat to Turkey’s Nurcihan Ekinci in the round of 16 of the Paralympic Games for women in the K 44-47 kg class on Thursday.

Aruna was absolutely no match for her opponent from Turkey who collected points at will during the five-minute round. Ekinci scored two points nine times from a body kick during the match, while the Indian also received one penalty point (gam-jeom).

The K44 category includes athletes with limitations in one arm above the elbow.

Para Taekwondo was introduced at the 2021 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Athletes compete in five separate weight categories for each gender.

In Para Taekwondo, competitions are held in the form of one round, lasting a maximum of five minutes.

An important difference from the Olympic Games for able-bodied athletes is that kicks to the head and punches are not allowed, because not all athletes can block in the same way.

Athletes wear protective gear and ‘sensor socks’, which measure whether a point is scored when the opponent’s torso is hit.

Athletes receive two points for a normal kick, three points for a spinning kick and four points for a turning kick.

Fouls such as headbutting, grabbing, pushing, kicking below the belt or stepping outside the line result in a gam-jeom, a penalty kick that awards the opponent one point.
