Pakistani-origin Tayyab Ikram re-elected as international hockey president

Tayyab Ikram, a Macau native with Pakistani roots, is set to make history again by being re-elected unopposed as president of the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

No other candidates filed nominations by the Aug. 31 deadline, clearing the way for Ikram’s second term as head of the global governing body.

The official announcement is expected during the FIH elections in Muscat, Oman, on November 9. Ikram, the first Pakistani to lead the FIH, has gained wide recognition as one of the sport’s foremost global administrators.

His extensive career includes leadership roles with the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) and the Asian Hockey Federation.

The Pakistani-origin FIH president has played a key role in shaping the sport at seven Olympic Games, including the 2024 Paris Games.

During his first term, Ikram enhanced the FIH’s reputation on the international stage, with the organisation earning a nomination for the prestigious IOC Climate Action Award.

Under his leadership, the “FIH Empowerment and Engagement Strategy” was also launched, aimed at promoting hockey globally.

Despite challenges, including the loss of the host rights for the 2024 Olympic qualifying matches, Ikram remains committed to reviving hockey in his home country.

He has pledged to develop a sustainable model for the sport that will inspire future generations and restore Pakistan’s dominance in global hockey.
