Over The Hill: The Story of Strathmore’s Old Scooter Gang – StrathmoreNow.com

Strathmore has an elderly scooter gang who spend their old age helping out at local events and riding around town.

They call themselves the Over the Hill Scooter Gang and have been operating out of Wheatland Lodge for three years now. Since their inception, the gang has helped many local initiatives and organizations, from the local Terry Fox Run to the Wheatland & Area Hospice Society.

“We’ve got the Rockyford Rodeo here in two weeks, and then we’re doing the Strathmore parade,” said Allan McKinnon, one of the gang’s founders. “We just have a lot of fun. It’s a fun gang, that’s what it is. We meet a lot of people on the trails, a lot of high fives, a lot of honking, a lot of little kids.”

“We race those little kids on their tricycles, but they always beat us,” McKinnon joked.

Since the gang started, McKinnon has worn out three different scooters and replaced them with a more powerful upgrade.

“We’ve gotten as big as we can get. We can cover about 10 miles at top speed, but we rarely run at top speed.”

Currently, the Over the Hill Scooter Gang has 12 members and, according to McKinnon, they are no longer accepting new members.

“We don’t have enough space in the shed. There are three sheds here with two or three machines in them plus the bikes and stuff, but we have limited space.”

McKinnon said the best part about being in the gang is the fun they have.

“Strathmore has some great trails. Some of the things you never see unless you’re on a scooter or a bike because you can’t see them from the streets. It’s really good.”

Over the Hill’s next public appearance will be on July 27 at the Rockyford Rodeo Parade.
