One of the best games of the year is coming to mobile – and now I have no excuse not to try it

One of the best games of 2024 is coming to mobile later this year, which means I, and anyone else who hasn’t yet jumped in, have no reason not to check it out.

Balatro was released in February and quickly made an impression, with an all-time peak on Steam of just under 38,000 players. Considering it’s a poker-themed roguelite, those numbers are incredible, and the player base is only going to grow.

Posted today on X (formerly Twitter), Balatro’s official account announced a mobile release date of September 26th and will feature the recent Friends of Jimbo update that introduced collaborations with The Witcher, Vampire Survivors, Among Us, And Dave the Diver.

Despite being on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox, I still avoid the game Balatro despite my enjoyment of roguelites and my eagerness to learn what to do in poker. However, with a switch to mobile, it feels like this should be the end of my Balatro dry period.

Balatro’s Switching to mobile is sure to ruffle some feathers in any office due to lack of productivity and could lead to marital strife due to how well I’ve been told. In fact, the game’s solo developer even posted an “I’m sorry” following the announcement of the mobile port.

Can play Balatro on the go will certainly appeal to players, especially those who are stuck with long commutes or boring meetings with the in-laws. But the downside is that you might not get everything done on your to-do list.

At least you can win some virtual tons and become a poker pro, while also working with some big titles, so it’s worth it.
