Olympic soccer opens with controversy, US men lose to France, MLS All-Star Game recap

The U.S. men’s national soccer team got off to a disappointing, yet expected, start to their quest for Olympic glory when they lost 3-0 to France in their opening match of the group stage. While the result wasn’t what they wanted, there was plenty of reason to be encouraged by what the junior team did in their first appearance at the Games since 2008.

Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros discuss the entire match, why they were successful in the first half of the match and that they need to improve ahead of an important match against New Zealand on Saturday. If they fail to make it through the group stage, it would be a complete disappointment for the under-23 squad.

Also in this episode of The Cooligansthe men address the many controversies that have already occurred during the Olympic Games, including the wild ending to the Argentina-Morocco match and two members of the Canadian women’s soccer team being sent home for using a drone to spy on a training session in New Zealand.

Christian and Alexis close the show with a look back at the MLS All-Star Game that took place in Columbus, and commissioner Don Garber gives his speech on the state of the league.
