Olympic benchwarmer Tyrese Haliburton causes hilarity among fans when he mocks his role on the US basketball gold medal-winning team

Tyrese Haliburton barely played for the U.S. men’s basketball team at the Olympics, but the Pacers guard apparently isn’t too upset about it, as he joked about his role after the gold medal game.

After the US victory over France, in which Haliburton did not participate, he posted a selfie with his gold medal, with a hilarious caption.

“When you don’t get a good grade on a group assignment and still get an A,” he wrote on X.

As he noted, Haliburton didn’t have much of an impact on the U.S.’s success, playing in just three of the six games and a total of 26 minutes — the team’s lowest total.

The two-time NBA All-Star averaged just 2.7 points per game as he played most of his minutes when the US had a big lead.

Still, he is clearly happy to have won a gold medal and fans appreciated his humorous and self-aware message on Saturday.

“Bro got an all expenses paid trip to Paris to watch the Olympics and got a gold medal. W,” said one.

“Okay this was hilarious,” another fan added.

“I just earned even more respect for you, you’re going to be on the 2028 team (don’t worry),” said a third.

As suggested in the previous post, there is a good chance that the 24-year-old Haliburton will be part of the team (and play a bigger role) at the upcoming Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

While Haliburton has developed into one of the NBA’s best point guards, he was held back in this tournament by more defensive-oriented guards like Derrick White and Jrue Holiday.

The team also largely revolved around its oldest players, as LeBron James (39), Stephen Curry (36) and Kevin Durant (35) all played crucial roles.

The three names mentioned above will likely all be out of the picture during the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and more reliance will probably be placed on Haliburton’s scoring ability and insight into the game.
