Olivier Giroud backs Atletico Madrid star to join him in MLS – ‘He was a bit jealous’

According to Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann was “a little jealous” when he learned of his move to MLS club LAFC, hoping his former France teammate would join him in the United States.

Giroud landed in Los Angeles earlier this week, where he is preparing for life in Los Angeles and may even make his debut in the black and gold shirt in the knockout rounds of the Leagues Cup.

The 37-year-old striker joins compatriot Hugo Lloris at the BMO Stadium and during his introductory press conference Giroud suggested that LAFC could make it a trio of French world champions in the near future.

“When he saw the news that I had signed with LAFC, he was a little jealous,” Giroud said of Atletico Madrid forward Griezmann (via mlssoccer.com).

“I told him, ‘Don’t worry, we’ll meet soon, hopefully.’ I don’t know how far along we are with the club, but I sent him away straight away when I saw he was linked to the club and he said, ‘Let’s have a look.’ I know he loves the US. Basketball, baseball, football. One day or the other he’ll come here.”

Twellman: Griezmann and LAFC a natural marriage

Former US international and prominent MLS analyst Taylor Twellman has long been a proponent of Griezmann’s move to the United States.

Twellman even called LAFC and Griezmann, a 135-time France international, a “natural marriage.”

“You’ve heard it here since February. I’ve said that Griezmann and LAFC were a natural marriage waiting to happen,” Twellman said in his Twellman’s Takes YouTube series.

“Hugo Lloris, Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann. All World Cup winners. All good friends. And they all want their careers to end on Sunset Boulevard.”
