Carseland-based Oku Damashi Martial Arts is holding a fundraising campaign to help the club qualify for a special world tournament in Portugal.

The club sent six students to Ottawa last month to compete in the National Karate Tournament, and they brought home eight medals, including five gold and three bronze medals in both Continuous and Point Sparring.

These six students will now represent Team Canada and compete at the World Karate Championships (WKC) in Albufeira, Portugal, from October 26 to November 1.

Jessica Alce explains that from now until September they will be holding a number of different fundraisers to raise money for the students going to Portugal.

“It’s largely funded by the families, so it can get quite expensive. One of our fundraisers is a 50/50 raffle box. The first prize is a $1,000 drink basket, the second is six tickets to the Train of Terror through Aspen Crossing , and the third is an oven cleaning from Action Furnace.”

Another way to donate to charity is to save your empty bottles.

“When they drop off bottles at the Langdon Bottle Depot, all they have to do is say it’s for the Oku Damashi Fundraiser.”

According to Alce, participants hope to raise $4,000 each for the trip.
