LAKE LINDEN – Wednesday was opening night for Copper Country women’s softball at the Boneyard. During the opener, Gold Standard recorded a 5-2 victory over JB’s Sales and Service. In the second game of the evening Superior Service “gracious” Superior National Bank 11-1 in just five innings.

In the opener, Gold Standard got on the board first and never looked back. They scored two runs in the first, one in the second and two more in the third. Those five runs were all women’s in this 5-2 victory.

“The girls hit the ball well and Payton (Goldsworthy) threw great,” said coach Curtis Kinnunen.

Goldsworthy earned the win, striking out 10 of JB’s batters along the way.

With a big bat in the first inning it was Ashlyn Steves and Goldsworthy, both getting hits and scoring. Steves kept the charts going in the second with an RBI double to plate Jade Guilbault.

In the third, walks to Lena Myhren and Goldsworthy set the stage for Jovie Daniels to earn some RBIs, and she came through with a hit up the middle.

JB’s two runs came in the fifth, with Lucy Biekkola and Lexi Burns both scoring.

“All in all it was a great team effort” added Kinnunen. “I was pleased with the way the girls played.”

In the nightcap, Superior Service got off to a blazing start with six runs in the first inning after Superior National Bank scored one in their opening at bat.

Josie Heinonen got the win on the mound, keeping the Superior National Bank bats at bay after that one run.

Meanwhile, big hits by Laura Giachino, Isabelle Cleary and Reagan Moyle led to multiple RBIs for Superior Service.

Player-coach Raili Therrian summed up Superior Service’s efforts best.

“The girls were cheerful and enthusiastic at the start of the season,” she said. “Our bats were strong and we had some big hits across the lineup. Josie’s pitching carried us on defense.”

While it was a great start on the field, Superior National Bank player-coach Kim Aho said her team needs to do better on the home field.

‘I thought we did well defensively, especially for a first game’ she said. “But we need to get more on the basics.”
