Oakland Athletics vs Cincinnati Reds – August 29, 2024

The Cincinnati Reds have lost the first two games of this series to Oakland. This afternoon they will try to salvage a win and avoid being swept by the Athletics. First pitch today is scheduled for 5:10 PM ET.

Starting line-up

Starting pitchers

Julian Aguiar

Julian Aguiar will make his third big-league start tonight. He’s been solid in the first two and will look to keep it that way. And he may be asked to pitch deep into the game, given the shape of the club’s rotation and how they’ve had to chew through the bullpen to deal with injuries this week.

Both lefties and righties hit Aguiar about the same amount when it comes to batting average. But that’s where the comparison ends. Lefties run more, make more contact, and hit with more power than their righties.

JT Ginn

Like Aguiar, Ginn is in his rookie season and has pitched in just two games. None of his appearances have been starts, however, and he has only thrown 3.2 innings as a major league player thus far.

In the minor leagues, he was the starter, making 20 starts with just one relief appearance, so he’s stretched thin if Oakland wants him to pitch more than a few innings. Left-handed hitters have had much more success against him this season than right-handers. They walk more, make a lot more contact and hit with a lot more power.

News and Notes

Brandon Leibrandt up, Casey Kelly out

The Reds called up Brandon Leibrandt from Triple-A. The left-handed pitcher has been used as the Bats’ starter since signing with Cincinnati in late May. He takes the spot of Casey Kelly, who was designated for assignment. You can read more about the moves in our article from earlier today if you want more details.

For the last time. Maybe?

Today could be the last time the Cincinnati Reds play the Oakland Athletics. They’ll be playing in Sacramento for the next few years before hopefully moving to Las Vegas. Of course, the deal for a stadium in Las Vegas hasn’t been finalized yet, and there are still questions about whether or not it will actually happen, no matter what the owner of Oakland tries to sell you. It’s possible they could end up back in Oakland if everything falls apart.
