Nuno Mendes: Paris St-Germain condemn online racism against defender

Paris St-Germain say they “stand firmly behind defender Nuno Mendes”, who was racially abused online after the club wins 3-1 against Brest in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

PSG say the 22-year-old Portuguese left-back has their full support after he shared the reactions he received on his Instagram story.

Brest took the lead after Mendes brought down Ludovic Ajorque to give away a penalty, which was converted by Romain del Castillo.

“Paris St-Germain does not tolerate racism, anti-Semitism or any other form of discrimination,” the club said. “The racist insults directed at Nuno Mendes are completely unacceptable.

“We stand firmly behind Nuno and all those affected and are working with the relevant authorities and associations to ensure that those responsible are held to account for their actions.

“At Paris St-Germain, we strive to create an environment of inclusion, respect and unity, both on and off the pitch. Racism has no place in football and we will continue to uphold the values of tolerance and respect that characterise our club.”

PSG recovered and won the match. PSG started the season perfectly again, thanks to Ousmane Dembele who scored two goals, in addition to a strike from Fabian Ruiz.

Mendes has made 80 appearances for PSG in all competitions, initially joining the side on loan from Sporting Lisbon in August 2021 before signing permanently the following May.
