NTSB investigates fatal plane crash in Cross City

CROSS CITY, Fla. (WCJB) – Two people were aboard a small plane Sunday afternoon when the plane crashed near the Cross City Airport.

Officials say a Lancair 360, a two-seat plane, crashed while attempting to land at the airport around 4 p.m. The plane originated from Altomore, Alabama Airport.

Airport officials say one person was killed and the other passenger was taken to hospital in critical condition.

A family member shared an update on the resident’s condition, but asked that his name not be shared at this time.

“He is stable but is currently in critical condition in intensive care,” a family member said. “We don’t know enough at this point to provide information to the media. The family is Christian and asks for prayers.”

An airport worker who witnessed the crash told TV20 that the plane appeared to be going with the wind, rather than against it, which may have contributed to the crash.

An investigator from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) arrived at the airport on Sunday. The investigator conducted interviews and oversaw the recovery of the plane on Wednesday.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is aware of the crash, but the NTSB will lead the investigation.

Witnesses to the crash or those with surveillance footage or other information that may be relevant to the investigation are asked to contact the NTSB at [email protected].
