Novak Djokovic addresses centre court fans after victory over Holger Rune

Former world number 1 Novak Djokovic was at his best when he defeated Holger Rune in three sets (6-3, 6-4, 6-2) to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. However, it was the crowd on centre court that attracted the most attention.

Djokovic began swearing at “disrespectful” fans after a section of the crowd wrote down Rune’s name during the match.

The Serb said in an on-field interview after the match that while the fans were cheering Rune, which he admitted, it was also an opportunity for them to boo.

“To all the fans who have respect and stayed here tonight, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart, I appreciate it. And to all those people who chose to disrespect the player, in this case me, have a goooooood evening,” he said.

He added: “I know they were cheering for Rune, but that’s an excuse to boo as well. I’ve been in the Tour for more than 20 years. So believe me, I know all the tricks. I know how it works. It’s fine. It’s fine.”

Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion who is seeking his 25th Grand Slam title, said he would rather focus on respectful fans who appreciate the players’ efforts. “I focus on respectful people who have respect, who paid the ticket to come and watch tonight and love tennis and appreciate the players and the effort they put in. I’ve played in much more hostile environments. Trust me, guys, you can’t touch me,” he added.

The 37-year-old was at his best from the start, winning the first 12 points to take control of the match. Although he dropped the intensity a bit in the second set, it was not enough for Rune to make a comeback in the match.

Djjovic will face Australian Alex De Minaur in the quarterfinals on Wednesday and said he expects to run a lot in that match and that he enjoys it at this age. “I feel good. Alex (De Minaur) is one of the fastest, if not the fastest player on Tour. So you know I will have to run a lot. But I still enjoy running at 37, so I’m OK,” he concluded.
