Northern Utahns Bybee, Chadwick Named to Utah Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2024 | News, Sports, Jobs

The Utah Golf Hall of Fame will add seven more members this year, the Utah Golf Association announced.

By inducting new members only every four years, the class of 2024 will bring the Hall of Fame to 55 members for the sport’s 125-year history of golf in the state.

Leading the class of 2024 for Northern Utah are Brigham City native Doug Bybee and Ogden native Garey Chadwick.

In addition, Weber State alum and former Standard-Examiner reporter Guy Yocom will be inducted for his long career in golf journalism.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for October.

DOUG BEE

Bybee, a Brigham City native and graduate of Box Elder High School and the University of Utah, persevered through two finals losses at the Utah State Am to become the third three-time champion.

Bybee’s 1996 title made him the first three-time winner in 37 years, a feat no one has matched since.

Bybee grew up near the Brigham Willows Golf Course, where he caddied for his father, Ray, until course rules allowed him to start playing at age 10.

He was State Am runner-up in 1981 (to Eric Hogg) and 1982 (to Steve Schneiter). Bybee became a professional golfer for five years and then regained amateur status while working as a marketing manager.

He won the 1990 match play title at Alpine Country Club (in Highland), then repeated as State Am champion in 1991 at Jeremy Ranch (Park City) in an 85-yard eagle run to win his semifinal on a playoff hole. .

Bybee returned to the final match at Hobble Creek Golf Course (Springville) in 1996, winning the 36-hole finals 10 and 9.

Bybee’s 33 match play wins are the second most in Utah State Am history.

GAREY CHADWICK

The late Garey Chadwick, a Weber High School alumnus, was a “kind administrator and rules official,” says the Hall of Famer, a man most people knew as Chad.

“He was there to make players feel comfortable. He would take lawyer-speak out of the rule book and bring it back to the player level,” said former UGA executive Jake Miller.

Chadwick, a former caddy at Ogden Golf & Country Club, died in 2018 at the age of 80.

Chadwick was the winner of the Utah Section PGA’s Presidential Service Award in 2014, UGA Volunteer of the Year in 2018, served as president of the Utah Junior Golf Association and served on the UGA board of directors for 12 years.

GUY YOCOM

Guy Yocom, a native of Salt Lake City, led to a decades-long career with Golf Digest at the Weber State Signpost and the Standard-Examiner in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Although he became a good player during his time at Weber State through his association with many golfers, he wrote about it even more than he played it.

“I just fell in love with golf… I wrote about it all the time.” Yocom said in the press release.

His conversational style led to his being hired at Golf Digest, where he worked for 36 years, retiring with the title of “senior writer.”

Yocom’s “My Shot” film became a Golf Digest staple and during his career he interviewed Ben Hogan and worked with Tiger Woods and Utah’s Johnny Miller.

Others inducted into the class of 2024 include Bruce Brockbank Jr. (former BYU golf coach), Randy Dodson (creator of Fairways Magazine), Sherm Hatfield (rules official) and Eric Hogg (winner of the State Am and Utah Open).
