Northern Colorado’s Sophia Smith is headed to the Olympics with the U.S. women’s soccer team

Sophia Smith is on her way to the Olympic Games.

The Northern Colorado soccer star was named to the 18-player women’s soccer team for the 2024 United States Olympic Games on Wednesday.

Smith, a forward, played 48 times for the US and scored 19 goals.

The Fossil Ridge High School graduate plays for the Portland Thorns in the NWSL. She leads the league with 10 goals and is second in the league with six assists. Smith was the 2022 NWSL MVP.

The 23-year-old Smith is a likely starter for the Americans in their hunt for gold. These are her first Olympic Games. She played at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

The Paris Olympics begin for the U.S. with a July 25 match against Zambia at 1 p.m. Mountain.

Smith is joined by Mallory Swanson and Lindsey Horan as Coloradans on the roster.
