Norfolk State names Angie Nicholson as softball coach – The Virginian-Pilot

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Norfolk State announced the appointment of Angie Nicholson as its new softball coach on Wednesday.

Nicholson brings 24 years of coaching experience to the Spartans, including the past three years at Georgia State and the previous five years at Hampton. She also spent time at Eastern Illinois, Cleveland State, Ursuline College and Cuyahoga Community College.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Angie Nicholson to our Norfolk State family as our head softball coach,” said NSU athletic director Melody Webb. “With a distinguished resume, including a spectacular record in the MEAC, she has lifted multiple Division I programs to unprecedented heights through her knowledge, dedication and work ethic.”

While at Hampton, the Pirates won the 2017 MEAC regular season title, going 17-1 in conference play.

“I am extremely excited to return to the 757 area and lead NSU,” Nicholson said. “I would like to thank AD Webb for this amazing opportunity and for her trust and belief in me to transform this program and reach its full potential!”

The Spartans went 4-43 last season.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

ODU, HU in Cayman Islands event

Old Dominion and Hampton are among an eight-team field that will compete in the Cayman Islands Classic on November 24-26 in George Town, Grand Cayman.

The other teams are Boise State, Boston College, Duquesne, High Point, Missouri State and South Dakota State. Three of the programs in the field – Duquesne, Boise State and South Dakota State – made the NCAA Tournament last season.

Richmond’s coach gets a new contract

Richmond men’s basketball coach Chris Mooney has agreed to a contract extension.

He guided the Spiders to their first Atlantic 10 regular-season championship last season and was the league’s Coach of the Year. He is entering his twentieth season.

His 348 wins are a school record and the third most by a head coach in Atlantic 10 history.

Maton from Tides goes to Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Nick Maton from the Norfolk Tides and selected outfielder Kyle Stowers to Norfolk on Wednesday.

Maton has hit .294 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs in 41 games with the Tides this season.

NSU trio to play in HBCU game

Norfolk State catcher Manny Jackson, third baseman Justin Journette and outfielder Jamal Ritter have been selected to participate in MLB’s second annual HBCU Swingman Classic on July 12 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

It will be Jackson’s second appearance at the event. He hit .330 this season with three home runs and 30 RBIs.

Journette hit .304 with 15 home runs and 47 RBIs, while Ritter hit .275 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs.

  • James Madison infielder Wyatt Peifer has been named to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove team. He is the first Dukes player to win a Gold Glove award.

UVA players earn academic honors

Five UVA women’s players have been named to the All-ACC Academic Team: Megan Propeck, Amanda Sambach, Rebecca Skoler, Celeste Valinho and Jaclyn LaHa.

UVA men’s players Bryan Lee, Paul Chang, Chris Fosdick and Josh Duangmanee were also part of the team.

  • Christopher Newport’s Andrew Cook and Ryan Young have been named All-Americans by the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association. Cook was on the first team, while Young was on the second team.
  • Henry Garcia had two hits and four RBIs and the Peninsula Pilots (13-7) nearly blew a 13-3 lead before holding on for a 13-12 win over the Wilson Tobs on Tuesday night in Wilson, North Carolina.
  • Penn State’s Michelle Cox posted under-par rounds of 71, 67 and 71 to earn a seven-shot victory in the second Virginia Women’s Open at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian on Wednesday.
