Norfolk man pleads guilty to child sex abuse | Select

MADISON – A Norfolk man who sexually abused a girl over a period of more than five years faces up to six years in prison after pleading guilty Friday in Madison County District Court.

Luis Onate-Rodriguez, 45, pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree sexual assault of a child, both of which carry a maximum penalty of three years in prison.

Onate-Rodriguez had been charged with second-degree sexual assault of a child — which carries a maximum sentence of 50 years — but that charge was amended as part of a plea agreement. Also as part of the plea deal, the Madison County Attorney’s Office will not issue a sentencing recommendation at sentencing, which is scheduled for Thursday, January 16.

Onate-Rodriguez was arrested and charged in March following allegations that he inappropriately touched a girl beginning in July 2016, when she was 9 years old, and continuing until December 2021, when she was 14.

Assistant Madison County Attorney Matthew Kiernan said the victim had slept in a shared bedroom for about three years, during which time Onate-Rodriguez entered the room three to four nights a week and sexually touched the girl.

The victim was alone in a bedroom from July 2019 to December 2021, during which time Onate-Rodriguez continued to enter her room three to four nights a week and sexually assault her.

District Judge Mark Johnson ruled the attacks were aggravated in nature, subjecting Onate-Rodriguez to lifetime sex offender registration.

Onate-Rodriguez is free after posting a 10% bond of $100,000 shortly after his arrest.
