World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz’s hopes of a third consecutive major were dashed on Thursday evening after a surprise defeat to No. 74 Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round of the 2024 US Open.

Van de Zandschulp defeated Alcaraz in three sets: 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 and thus won against Arthur Ashe in New York.

Alcaraz entered the tournament having won Wimbledon and Roland Garros earlier this season.

He recently lost to Novak Djokovic in the battle for the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

On Thursday night, Alcaraz was eliminated in the second round of a major tournament for the first time since 2021. At Wimbledon, he was eliminated by Daniil Medvedev.

The second round match was also the highest victory in van de Zandschulp’s career.

The 28-year-old Dutch pro reached the quarter-finals at the 2021 US Open. Van de Zandschulp is now set to face Jack Draper on Saturday as the 2024 edition of the tournament advances to the third round.
