NKY woman convicted in dorm attack captured on video at University of Kentucky

A Northern Kentucky woman who admitted in court that she made racist comments and assaulted another student in a dormitory at the University of Kentucky was sentenced Thursday, according to WKYT.

Sophia Rosing, 23, of Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, pleaded guilty Aug. 12 to four misdemeanor charges, as well as disorderly conduct and public intoxication, Fayette County Commonwealth’s Attorney Kimberly Baird said. She was banned from the University of Kentucky campus.

In exchange for Rosing’s plea, prosecutors agreed to reduce a misdemeanor charge against a police officer to a misdemeanor.

Rosing was sentenced to 12 months in prison, 100 hours of community service and a $25 fine, WYKY said.

Rosing’s charges stem from a racist tirade and assault on a Black student on Nov. 6, 2022. It began when Rosing was arrested following a confrontation in Boyd Hall.

According to a citation from the University of Kentucky Police, an officer responded to the residence hall for a report of a woman assaulting staff members.

The case came into the public eye after videos were posted online. In them, a woman identified by authorities as Rosing is seen struggling with the clerk and later with the police. The video also shows her repeatedly making racist comments.

Rosing was arrested that evening and later permanently banned from campus. British President Eli Capilouoto announced on social media that she would not be allowed to re-enroll at university.

Fred Peters, Rosing’s attorney, said the plea followed mediation between Rosing and the victims. As part of the mediation, the victims were also given the opportunity to confront Rosing about what happened, Baird said, adding that the victims ultimately supported Rosing taking a plea.
