Nigerian government announces improved bonuses for Paralympic athletes

The Federal Government has announced that the winning bonuses for Nigerian Paralympic athletes participating in the upcoming 2024 Paralympic Games, scheduled for August 28 to September 8, will be revised upwards.

According to NAN, this was contained in a statement by Mrs Kehinde Ajay, Director of Press at the Ministry of Sports Development in Abuja.

Ajay quoted Minister John Owan Enoh, who said this during an interactive session with the para-athletes at their training camp in Saarbrücken, Germany.

Enoh said the revamped bonus model offers $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000 for gold, silver and bronze medal winners respectively.

According to the minister, this is in stark contrast to the proceeds from the recently concluded Olympic Games, where $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 were available for the gold, silver and bronze winners respectively.

He explained that the gesture is part of the Federal Government’s recognition and appreciation for the sacrifices, dedication and commitment of the athletes in their quest to represent the country and make it proud within the community of nations.

The minister urged the athletes to see the gesture as a moral boost that would revive their sporting spirit, rekindle their patriotism and give them the much-needed courage to propel them to glory.

Enoh stressed that the athletes must do better than the poor performance of Team Nigeria at the recently concluded Olympic Games.

“The country (Nigeria) is not in a happy mood as it is and I want you all to look at yourselves as the people who are going to create and bring back joy,” Enoh added.
