NFL Week 1 2024: Minnesota Vikings at New York Giants

The long, dark teatime of the NFL season is almost over, as this Sunday the Minnesota Vikings take the field for the first time since January in a game that matters. They’ll kick off the 2024 NFL season on the road, traveling to MetLife Stadium to take on the New York Giants.

The Vikings are in the midst of some pretty significant changes, to say the least. Kirk Cousins, the team’s quarterback for the past six seasons, is gone, with Sam Darnold taking his place, and the team’s quarterback of the future, JJ McCarthy, has been sidelined for the season. The team is also awaiting the return of tight end TJ Hockenson, and the status of wide receiver Jordan Addison is uncertain after he suffered an injury during joint practices with Cleveland last month.

Additionally, the Vikings have had to deal with the death of one of their young draft picks, cornerback Khyree Jackson, a season-ending injury to cornerback Mekhi Blackmon and more legal troubles for Addison.

It hasn’t all been bad though, as there are a slew of exciting new faces making their debut for Minnesota in this game, including rookie edge defender Dallas Turner and several other big names on defense in edge defenders Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel and linebacker Blake Cashman. The Vikings also get another new face in the offensive backfield, as running back Aaron Jones has come over from Green Bay to bolster the Vikings’ offense.

The Giants get their starting quarterback back in this game. Daniel Jones was sidelined early in the 2023 season for the Giants with a torn ACL after playing in just six games. Despite a big contract extension, the Giants could have a short leash on Jones. He’ll have a new target to get the ball to in first-round pick Malik Nabers, who will make his NFL debut for the Giants.

Both teams struggled last season, with the Giants finishing the year at 6-11 and the Vikings only one game better. The Vikings haven’t been favored in many games this season, but they are currently the favorites in this game, as they open this game as a slight 1.5-point favorite going away. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for Sunday, September 9th at 12:00 PM Central Time.
