With one receiver joining the group, another could be headed to the New York Jets.

After NFL Network Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday that the Jets have acquired Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders for a conditional selection in the third round. NFL insider Josina Anderson noted that some around the league are “wondering” whether New York will now make wide receiver Mike Williams available in a trade.

Insider Jordan Schultz added more context:

Things haven’t gone according to plan for the Jets and Williams this season.

While the AFC East team signed him last offseason, he has just 10 catches for 145 yards and zero touchdowns in six games. He also slipped on Aaron Rodgers’ final pass of Monday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, and the throw was intercepted by Taron Johnson.

His short stint with the Jets is much different than when he rushed for over 1,000 yards twice for the Los Angeles Chargers during the first seven years of his career. He also led the NFL with 20.4 yards per reception in 2019 and had 10 touchdown catches in 2018.

Still, Williams was limited to just three games last season due to a torn ACL and hasn’t looked like the same receiver this year as he did before the injury.

There are also only so many targets to go around, as Adams becomes the No. 1 option on a team that already features Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard at wide receiver, along with Breece Hall and Braelon Allen at running back.

Williams probably won’t see many opportunities with all the skill position players surrounding Rodgers, and trading him for whatever compensation it can get may be the best alternative for New York’s front office.

He probably won’t command a significant return price, but a change of scenery could be the best option for everyone involved.
