It appears that the ongoing contract dispute between the New York Jets and linebacker Haason Reddick is not over yet. The two parties have reportedly been at odds for some time.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that when the Jets acquired Reddick in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, they made him a “below-market” contract offer that he turned down. The team never made a new offer because they “were informed by Reddick’s representative that he would play under his current contract.”

The Jets have maintained that they were confident Reddick would play through the 2024 season under the final year of his deal, which carries a base salary of $14.25 million. That belief is reportedly why New York has not made Reddick another long-term contract offer since acquiring him from Philadelphia, but Russini reported that was part of the communication problem that led Reddick to request a trade on Monday.

According to Russini, Reddick’s camp was impressed that the Jets said they would negotiate a new deal for him. Reddick’s representatives were “confident that this would be done before camp.” Russini added that the Jets contacted Reddick a few weeks ago and said they would be willing to review his current deal if he showed up for training camp, but he chose to continue his holdout.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that sources said before training camp that Reddick “was serious about his money and his respect, and he felt like he wasn’t getting either from the Jets.” Garafolo added that the impasse between the two teams “could last into the regular season.”

Jets general manager Joe Douglas released a statement Monday saying the team has no intention of trading Reddick. The two-time Pro Bowler is expected to be a key part of New York’s defense, so it would be in the franchise’s best interest to figure out how to resolve the contract dispute.
