Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels trained during his rookie NFL season with a virtual reality headset that displays AI-based game simulations, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Daniels also used the program, created by a Germany-based company called Cognilize, during his 2023 Heisman Trophy-winning season at LSU, as previously reported by Alec Lewis for The Athletic.

The quarterback has since taken the program to the NFL, where the Commanders “may be the only team in the league with the program,” Fowler wrote.

Cognilize, which was founded in 2019 as a soccer training program, bills itself on the company’s website as “immersive decision-making training for athletes,” which “improves split-second reads” and “increases reps in high-pressure environments.” makes possible. “

The football version of the program, according to Lewis, works by projecting “a setting on the field from the quarterback’s perspective” into a VR headset.

The program then simulates plays that occur as quickly or faster than real game action, Lewis wrote.

Lewis reported that the LSU football program sent the program’s developers a variety of different Tigers plays and coverages that the team might encounter so the VR could create situations that Daniels would likely encounter in real games.

“It’s our playbook. You’ve got to go against the defensive looks, starting coverage and stuff like that… It’s helped a lot, just getting more mental reps outside of practice and stuff like that, more physical reps,” Daniels told WAFB’s Jacques Doucet about the program during his senior season at LSU.

Fowler’s report did not specify whether commanders offered similar information.

Whatever training Daniels has been doing this season appears to be successful, as the 23-year-old paces the NFL with a 75.3 completion percentage in six games. He has passed for 1,404 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 322 yards and four touchdowns on the ground while leading the Commanders to open the season with a 4-2 record.
