NFL fines Chiefs and TE Peyton Hendershot for pushing Ravens’ Roquan Smith to the sideline in Week 1

The Kansas City Chiefs and tight end Peyton Hendershot have been fined by the NFL for a sideline shove on Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith during the two teams’ Week 1 game.

The Chiefs received $100,000 less and Hendershot received $5,472 less for a play in the fourth quarter of the Chiefs’ 27-20 win.

When quarterback Patrick Mahomes was out of bounds on the Chiefs sideline after running for a first down, Smith pushed him to the ground — a play that did not incur a penalty for a late hit. When Smith walked back onto the field to defend his actions, Hendershot, who was inactive, shoved Smith from behind, leading to an altercation between players and Smith pointing at Hendershot, who also did not incur a penalty.

Smith brought up Hendershot’s push from the sideline when speaking to reporters after the game.

“Oh, (Mahomes) flopped. Yeah, he flopped,” Smith said. “That’s why the refs didn’t flop it. It was a great no-call by the ref. But whoever 88 is, I don’t know who he is, but he’s got to watch out. He did a little, slick shove. Whoever No. 88 is, I have no idea who he is, but I’ll see him when I see him.”

According to NFL.com, the league sent a memo to all teams in early August reminding them that “non-player personnel (e.g., coaches, trainers, equipment personnel, security personnel) and non-participating players (e.g., inactive players, practice squad players) are prohibited from making unnecessary physical contact with opposing players, game officials or league representatives, or insulting or abusing them with offensive, threatening or insulting language or gestures.”

The memo also states that teams are responsible for the behavior of everyone on the sidelines during games.

Last season, Philadelphia Eagles senior guard Dom DiSandro was ejected from a Week 13 game after initiating an altercation with San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw on the sidelines. That prompted the NFL to suspend “Big Dom” for the team’s remaining five regular-season games before allowing him to return for Philadelphia’s Wild Card round series against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
