Newcastle revive interest in Barcelona striker

Newcastle United continue to show interest in Barcelona star Raphinha.

The Brazilian winger is one of the players Barcelona want to sell to ease their financial problems.

Newcastle had a bid reported to be worth £51million rejected earlier this summer, with Spanish reports suggesting the Magpies have rekindled their interest in the former Leeds United star, who has also been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi clubs are reportedly willing to spend big to sign him. However, Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reports that Newcastle have joined the race to sign Raphinha, although it won’t be a cheap move as they will have to spend a lot more than before.

The report reveals that Barcelona earlier in the transfer window rejected a €65 million bid from an unnamed Saudi club, claiming it undervalued the player.

Despite the financial pressure on Barcelona, Raphinha insists he is happy at the Spanish giants and has no intention of leaving the club.

It is unlikely that the Premier League club can match the financial clout of the Saudi clubs.

Although Newcastle are owned by Saudi Arabia’s wealthy Public Investment Fund (PIF), the Premier League’s strict financial fair play rules could limit their ability to match the financial strength of Saudi clubs without first selling some of their own players.
