Newcastle have adopted a deadline day approach for Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga, Mail Sport understands.

Eddie Howe has had a relatively quiet summer, despite his team’s considerable financial clout. On the final day of the transfer window, he has enquired about a possible deal for Elanga.

However, it is believed that Forest are in no rush to let the 22-year-old leave, especially given the lack of time to find a suitable replacement.

The Swedish international left Manchester United for Nuno Espirito Santo’s club last summer and has four years left on his current contract.

During his first season at City Ground, Elanga scored five times in 35 Premier League appearances.

Newcastle have made a late attempt to sign Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest

The Magpies’ long-standing interest in Marc Guehi ultimately ended in failure after Crystal Palace rejected a bid reported to be in the region of £65million.

Howe admitted at a press conference on Friday that the transfer window had not gone to plan for his side.

“It’s a challenging period, there’s no doubt about that. We haven’t had the window that we wanted, there’s no denying that.

“I’m not going to sit here and say it’s been a brilliant transfer window for us. I think everyone will look at me and think I’m not sure if he’s telling the truth.

“But my job is to continue to do my very best for the players we have here.”
