Newcastle have no regrets about selling Brighton

Newcastle United decided to let Yankuba Minteh leave for Brighton this summer in a bid to avoid the potentially even worse scenario of having to sell star players such as Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside For his column in the Daily Briefing, Fabrizio Romano gave an insight into Newcastle’s view on the Minteh deal. The 20-year-old has impressed since joining Brighton in the summer.

It is clear Newcastle had a fantastic young talent in their squad, but Romano insists the Magpies have no regrets about letting him go, even though he now clearly strengthens a Premier League rival.

Minteh could have a big future in the sport and Newcastle may come to regret that at some point, but according to Romano it appears the deal has saved them from losing established star players in their squad.

Yankuba Minteh in action for Brighton

Minteh transfer is a setback for Newcastle, but not a major drama

Romano said of Newcastle’s stance on the departure of the talented young Gambia international: “Yankuba Minteh has started very well since joining Brighton from Newcastle, which shows why he has been regarded as a top talent for some time.

“However, Newcastle have no regrets because there was no other way for them this summer. They were basically in a situation where they had to sell a top player or Minteh, and they preferred this solution to players like Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon or Alexander Isak.

“Of course it is disappointing for Newcastle to lose a promising talent and see him shine for another Premier League club, but it is part of the game, I don’t think it is a big drama.”

Brighton have been recruiting shrewdly in recent years and this looks to be another move that will pay off for them, even if it ultimately means they can bring in another star player in the near future, yielding significant returns.
