New role for Munster legend Brendan Foley…

BRENDAN Foley has been appointed as the new Chairman of Munster Rugby.

After two decades in more recent times at Ballina-Killaloe, he was surprised to be nominated for the role by his old club Shannon, where he enjoyed an illustrious 14-year playing career. He also coached at Shannon.

“It was a surprise to say the least. I had decided a few months earlier that I would end my roles in rugby and would be a supporter only. However, I feel honoured that Shannon would consider me for the nomination,” he said.

Foley, who began his career at St Mary’s CBS, played a leading role for Munster in the 1970s and 80s, appearing in a number of high profile matches.

A superb performance in a narrow defeat to touring Australia in 1976 earned him the first of many international caps, and he also enjoyed a number of tours with Ireland.

Foley was one of the most famous players of the Munster XV, which defeated the mighty All Blacks at Thomond Park in 1978.

Speaking about his new role, he said: “I hope the Munster senior team has a good season and that our clubs in the AIL do really well. We’d like to see a few more in Division 1A and teams moving up rather than down. I’d hate to lose another senior club so I’d like to see teams moving up in the league.”

“Then I hope that the national junior competition will flourish and that a few clubs will field more teams in the twenties. It seems to be a problem that we have a lot of U18 teams, but they don’t make it to twenty. So it would be nice if we had a few more teams to close that gap.”
