New Delhi prepares to host the 44th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia on September 8

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is expected to elect new leadership during the 44th OCA General Assembly, taking place on September 8 at the Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in New Delhi.

Olympic Council of Asia Acting President Randhir Singh, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya and top sports leaders from all 45 countries of Asia will be present on the occasion.

During this landmark event, former international shooter and veteran sports administrator Randhir Singh will be officially announced as the first Indian President of the OCA, after emerging as the sole candidate for the top post earlier this year.

The agenda for the event also includes the election of the president and vice presidents for East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia and West Asia. The elections will be held by secret ballot.

Speaking ahead of the elections, Randhir Singh said it was a great honour for the nation to host the OCA General Assembly in New Delhi.

“It is a great honour for the Indian sports community to host the all-important General Assembly of the OCA in the national capital. It is a privilege for our country to welcome special dignitaries from across the world, including members of the OCA and other major global sports organisations and bodies. We are confident that the forthcoming Assembly will blaze a new trail for Olympic sports in Asian countries under the new leadership,” Randhir Singh was quoted as saying in a press release by the Olympic Council of Asia. Ahead of the grand event on September 8, the Olympic Council of Asia will also hold a press conference at ITC Maurya in New Delhi on September 5 with Olympic Council of Asia Deputy Director General Vinod Kumar Tiwari and Indian Olympic Association (IOC) President PT Usha in attendance along with Randhir Singh. During the recently concluded Paris Olympics, India finished 71st in the medal tally while the United States of America finished first with a total of 126 medals.
