New Corpus Christi ISD class teaches sports refereeing

This year, students are learning how to officiate team sports competitions in a new course from Corpus Christi ISD.

The Corpus Christi ISD Board of Trustees approved the new course Monday night, which will be offered at Carroll, King, Ray, Miller, Moody and Veterans Memorial High Schools during the upcoming school year.

During the course, students are introduced to the rules of volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball and soccer and learn from experienced officials.

The course also teaches communication, decision-making and conflict management skills that are needed to work with coaches, players, parents and other officials during sporting events.

Students have the opportunity to join the Texas Association of Sports Officials.

“We had people in the community ask us to help train our athletic officials and referees,” said Jennifer Arismendi, director of instructional support for Corpus Christi ISD.

The Texas Association of Sports Officials has warned in recent years of a shortage of officials capable of covering every UIL and interscholastic competition.

Other area schools have also introduced sports refereeing classes. Flour Bluff ISD announced earlier this summer that it would add the elective course this fall.
