Nets’ Cam Johnson isn’t fazed by trade rumors

Nets forward Cam Johnson is just like the rest of us. He hears Cam Johnson’s name mentioned in NBA trade rumors.

But this is the world we live in: if you’re a good player on a team where you’re not expected to go anywhere, you’re wanted. That’s where Johnson is today. He’s ready to start the season and whatever happens, happens.

“I’ve been able to get comfortable with what’s going on,” he said, via Brian Lewis of the New York Post. “And even with the uncertainty, it’s not like an uncertainty where I don’t think our staff here, our front office here, has a lack of confidence in me.”

“So I have confidence in this group. I am confident to move forward. And I’m going to fight for this team. And it doesn’t even cross my mind. I mean, there’s a lot of basketball to be played here.”

Johnson has become the face of the team, along with point guard Dennis Schroder, following the offseason trade of Mikal Bridges to the Knicks.

Brooklyn also has its first NBA head coach in Jordi Fernandez. It’s very easy to see this as a rebuilding situation, meaning Johnson may or may not be fit for the long term. Everyone knows this.

But as far as this season goes, Johnson is ready to go.

“I came back for a few practices last season before that opener in Cleveland, and you’re fighting an uphill battle,” he said. “So to go out and get through this preseason, obviously some high-minute games, and to build that momentum is really important, especially shooting the ball.”
