India’s two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has qualified for this month’s season finale of the prestigious Diamond League after finishing fourth overall in 14 events around the world.

The season finale is a two-day affair on September 14 and 15 in Brussels. Chopra collected 14 points from his two second-place finishes in the one-day meetings in Doha and Lausanne.

He skipped the final series match in Zurich on Thursday.

The 26-year-old is two points behind Czech Jakub Vadlech. Anderson Peters from Grenada and German star Julian Weber occupy the top two spots with 29 and 21 points respectively. Peters had defeated Weber in the competition in Zurich.

Chopra, who won gold at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and added silver to his palmares at the Paris Olympics last month, has struggled with his fitness this season.

The boy from Haryana says he has been suffering from a groin injury even before the Olympics, which prevents him from completing the 90 metres.

The Indian finished second in the Lausanne Diamond Leg, beaten by Peters, who threw 90.61m. At the Paris Olympics, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem had taken gold with a monstrous throw of 92.97m.

“My first goal is to go to the doctor and get my groin 100 percent fit. I also want to get better technically and try to throw long distance again,” he said last month about his plans for this year and the coming year.

Chopra won the stage in Lausanne in 2022 and 2023 and finished second to Vadlejch in last year’s winner-takes-all finale in Eugene, US.

Each champion of the Diamond League season finale receives a prestigious “Diamond Trophy”, a prize money of $30,000 and a wildcard to the World Athletics Championships.

The DL final marks the end of Chopra’s season.
