According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Golden State Warriors and forward Jonathan Kuminga are not close in contract extension negotiations.

Charania reported on Friday that “both sides are still far apart in expansion talks” and that there is a “real belief” that discussions could extend into the season and free agency would be restricted.

The deadline for the Warriors to sign Kuminga to a rookie-scale contract extension is Monday.

Charania also reported that there is a “window” for Golden State to extend shooting guard Moses Moody before the deadline, with the 22-year-old “much more likely” to get a new deal compared to Kuminga.

Since being selected No. 7 overall in the 2021 NBA draft, Kuminga’s role in the Warriors’ rotation has gradually increased each year. Last season, he averaged a career-high 26.3 minutes per game, logging 46 starts in 74 appearances after playing a combined 28 games in his first two years.

He recorded 17.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 53.1 percent from the field as a starter last season.

Kuminga is entering the final year of his rookie contract, but the Warriors could still bring him back if a long-term extension isn’t agreed to. Even if he plays the 2024-25 season without a deal, he will be a restricted free agent during the following offseason and Golden State will have the opportunity to match any offer he receives.

NBA insider Jake Fischer said Kuminga and his representatives were seeking a full cap bid during the campaign No Cap room podcast on August 7 (h/t HoopsHype). However, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reported on September 12 that the Warriors were unwilling to offer the forward a full five-year extension.

It appears significant progress will need to be made in negotiations if Kuminga is to get a new deal before Monday.
