The Philadelphia 76ers are a mess. The team, mired in a 2-11 start, reportedly held a team meeting Monday night during which Tyrese Maxey called out Joel Embiid for chronic tardiness in team activities, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Despite this latest round of drama surrounding the Sixers, The Athletic’s Sam Amick, David Aldridge and Jared Weiss reported Tuesday that there is “no internal discussion at this time regarding the job status of coach Nick Nurse or president of basketball operations Daryl.” More.”

The 2024-2025 season should have been an exciting one for the Sixers.

Paul George was signed this offseason, giving the team the ideal two-way star to pair with Embiid and Maxey. It was perhaps the most talented and complementary group of stars the team has had in the Embiid era, and one that was bolstered by a solid lineup of veteran role players including Caleb Martin, Kyle Lowry, Andre Drummond, Kelly Oubre Jr. and Eric Gordon, among others.

But the trio of Embiid, George and Maxey have yet to play one game together due to injuries and Embiid’s three-game suspension. Both Embiid and George look rusty upon their returns, and the role players have failed to plug the leaks. And now the team’s internal affairs are being leaked to the media.

The blame game has already begun. Team meetings are leaked. And this was easily foreseeable before we knew the Sixers even had a team meeting.

It hasn’t all been negative. Jared McCain is the early frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award and looked like a future star, averaging 15.2 points and 2.5 assists per game. He has scored 20 or more points in five straight games, going some way to making up for Maxey’s absence, and looks to be a crucial contributor to the team going forward.

Guerschon Yabusele was also a revelation, providing the team with an option at both the 4 and 5, thanks in large part to his impressive perimeter shooting (36.7 percent from three).

But the Sixers will live and die on the performances of Embiid, George and Maxey, and they can’t afford to keep losing at such a consistent clip. The Play-In Tournament may have gotten off to a slow start as less impactful than in years past, but the Sixers are entering dangerous territory right now.

And while it hasn’t reportedly resulted in a hot seat for Nurse or Morey so far, one wonders if either would survive a season that didn’t include a playoff berth.
