NBA isn’t quite ready to explore expansion plans to address this later in the season

The NBA plans to begin exploring expansion soon, but it wasn’t seriously discussed during this week’s Board of Governors meeting. During the NBA Finals in June, Adam Silver said the league planned to “seriously” consider expansion in the fall.

“There wasn’t much discussion about expansion during this meeting, but that wasn’t so much for lack of interest, but more because we told them we’re not quite ready yet,” Silver said during his press conference on Tuesday.

“But it was something that we told our Board that we plan to tackle this season, and we’re not quite ready for that yet. But I think there’s certainly interest in the process, and I think we’re not there yet in terms of making specific decisions about markets or even frankly expanding.

“I know I’ve said this before, I think organizations need to grow over time. It’s appropriate. But it gets a little more complicated when it comes to selling equity in the league, what that means for existing television relationships, and so forth. What we’ve told interested parties is, thank you for your interest, we’ll get back to you. And that’s certainly the case in Seattle.”
