The recent NBA offseason made headlines with some of the league’s biggest stars making waves overseas and others taking their talents to new teams via trade and free agency; as a result, you can’t wait to play with your new team in NBA 2K25’s Play Now mode. When you take to the court in the latest iteration of the NBA 2K franchise on September 4 at 5 a.m. PST on PS5 and PS4, you’ll experience a host of improvements across all NBA 2K25’s competitive game modes, including Play Now Online* with the return of Leagues, a revamped leaderboard and ranking system, and more!

Whether playing solo or with a friend, the classic Play Now mode is the fastest way to get into the action and throw down thunderous dunks in a traditional head-to-head format. Choose from current NBA teams updated with active rosters, or pay tribute to basketball legends with iconic rosters from the past. While offline Play Now gives you the best choice right away, the rules of Play Now Online are a little different.

The biggest change to Play Now Online is the return of Leagues, a five-tiered ranking system with Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and GOAT used to determine your skill level. Every player starts at the Bronze level and has all 30 current NBA teams to choose from, but to access the expanded roster, you’ll need to level up.

• Bronze to Silver: Provides access to teams from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s eras
• Silver to gold: Unlocks teams from the 2000s era
• Gold to platinum: Unlocks teams from the 2010s era
• Platinum to GOAT: Unlocks a GOATED team (new GOATED team every season)

To advance from Bronze to Silver and so on, you’ll need to rack up enough Victory Points through winning to progress. But there’s a catch: in NBA 2K25, you can only use the same team once every five games, or until you move on to the next league. As fun as it would be to dominate every game with the Boston Celtics, there’s an extra incentive to use a lower-ranked squad.

Leagues use overall ratings to group teams into three tiers to quantify how Victory Points are awarded. Check out below:

• Level 1 – Win with one of the top 10 teams in the NBA to get the least amount of victory points
• Level 2 – Win with teams ranked 11th through 20th to receive the average number of victory points
• Level 3 – Win with teams in positions 21-30 to receive the most victory points

Pursuing victory is the ultimate goal in Play Now Online, but leveling up also comes with its own bragging rights. Players who earn enough points in the GOAT League will receive a VC award, an All-Time Team, and Prestige for completing the GOAT League. Additionally, players who place in the Top 100 will receive an in-game logo, visible to all players, to showcase their achievement.

Play Now Online in NBA 2K25 maintains the same authentic feel as always, but this year it’s been refreshed with significant changes to add an extra layer of competitive fun for you to enjoy. The simpler, cleaner UI makes understanding the new progression system easy for all skill levels and adds to the overall intuitive nature of Play Now.
