Navarro defeats second-seeded Gauff

The reigning men’s champion, Carlos Alcaraz, has advanced to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.

On Sunday, Spanish star defeated France’s Ugo Humbert 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to advance, while world number one Jannik Sinner defeated US’ Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 to reach the last eight.

Twelfth-seeded Tommy Paul of the US defeated Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 6-2, 7-6, 6-2, while fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia advanced after taking a 5-3 lead over Grigor Dimitrov. Dimitrov was forced to withdraw from the match due to injury.

There was another big surprise in the women’s event, when 19th-seeded Emma Navarro defeated her American compatriot and second-seeded Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-3.

Navarro said the many hours of hard work are starting to pay off.

“I felt a lot more comfortable on that stage than I thought I would,” Navarro said.

“Because I have gained a lot more experience in these types of stadiums, I now feel more comfortable in those types of environments.

“So I just rode the wave of that comfort, I guess.”

Meanwhile, Britain’s Emma Raducanu was knocked out 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 by New Zealand’s Lulu Sun.

French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini, in turn, made a huge comeback in the second set against Madison Keys, going on to win 6-3, 6-7, 5-5. Keys retired injured in the third and final set, seeing the Italian advance.

Donna Vekic in turn defeated Spain’s Paula Badosa 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
