Nassau County police vehicle strikes and kills pedestrian in Wantagh

A 22-year-old man died Friday after he was struck by a marked Nassau County police vehicle in Wantagh, authorities said.

The pedestrian was trying to walk westbound on Wantagh Avenue at the intersection of Duck Pond Drive North around 6:30 a.m. when he was struck by the vehicle, Nassau police said. He suffered multiple injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:05 a.m., police said.

Two officers were also treated for minor injuries, police said.

In a news release, Nassau police said their homicide unit is investigating the man’s death. Police said they also notified the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James about the fatal crash. Her office is charged with investigating incidents involving police and corrections staff, even when off-duty, that result in fatalities.

James’ representatives did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
