‘My word!’ – Ex-Saturday footballer left speechless after Gary Neville’s claim about Harry Kane

Former Queens Park Rangers player Rodney Marsh has expressed his disbelief at Gary Neville’s claim that Harry Kane tops the list as the greatest England player ever.

The debate was sparked by Neville’s comments about Kane’s fitness ahead of Euro 2024, with the ex-Manchester United defender suggesting that Kane appeared out of shape. Despite this, the Sky Sports pundit continued to heap praise on the England captain.

The sentiment was echoed by Wayne Rooney, who also praised Kane as the “best” in the country. Neville, reflecting on Kane’s performances and goalscoring, called him “England’s best ever in his position”. However, former QPR striker Marsh was utterly astonished when he disputed that Kane is not even among Tottenham’s best, let alone England’s.

Marsh expressed his feelings in a response to a Sky Sports tweet about Neville’s description of Kane as “the best ever”. He said: “My goodness, he’s not even the best Spurs player yet!!” Neville stood by his words and Rooney’s belief that Kane is the best English player to grace the international stage. He even reiterated his stance after Kane’s subdued performance in the Euro 2024 final.

The Mirror reported in a conversation with Neville on The Overlap in May that Rooney expressed his admiration for Kane, saying: “I think Harry Kane is an unbelievable player. The goals he’s scored, the assists and over the last few years, I would say he’s the best England player ever.”

While it remains unclear who Marsh considers superior to Kane in Tottenham’s history, the debate over Kane as England’s greatest ever striker is a contentious one. Kane, who holds the record for most goals scored for both Spurs and England, also represented the Three Lions in two European Championship finals and won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup.

When asked to name the worst colleague he’s ever worked with on screen, former Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday presenter Stelling replied: “Also ex of talkSPORT of course. But you know, Rodney was a difficult so-and-so.”
