Murder charges dismissed for teen arrested in connection with shooting of 80-year-old woman

SAN ANTONIO – A teenager accused of shooting and killing an 80-year-old woman had her murder charges dismissed, court records show.

Jacob Rios, 19, had the charges dropped on October 24.

Rios’ murder charge was dismissed before an arraignment, according to court records.

San Antonio police arrested Rios and an unidentified 16-year-old man on July 27 in connection with the shooting of 80-year-old Heidi Silkworth.

The shooting happened on May 26 around 10 p.m. in the 600 block of East César E. Chávez Boulevard.

Upon arrival, San Antonio police officers said they found Silkworth — an innocent bystander who had just attended the graduation ceremony at the Alamodome — with a gunshot wound to her head.

Police said the shooting occurred when Rios and the 16-year-old man were robbing another person. The robbery victim was armed and began shooting at Rios and the 16-year-old man, police said.

Rios and the 16-year-old returned fire as they ran from the robbery victim, SAPD said. During the gunfire, Silkworth – a passenger in a passing SUV – was shot dead, according to police.

Another person, believed to be involved in the gunfire, was seriously injured during the shooting. It is not known whether it was Rios, the 16-year-old man, or the robbery victim.

Authorities say the shooting remains under investigation.
