Most people believe this should have been done ages ago, but Spain’s Directorate General of Transport (DGT) is finally ready to create a comprehensive set of rules to govern electric scooters across the country, rather than Each town hall sets its own rules. .

Apparently the DGT has been working on these guidelines for the past three years, but the royal decree was only opened for public consultation on Wednesday, June 26, and the final text will have to be approved by the Council of Ministers before it comes into effect. .

While there is still plenty of time for changes, the current version of the proposed decision includes many more safety measures, such as a complete ban on riding electric scooters for anyone under the age of 16 and mandatory helmets and reflective vests.

The reform also states that personal mobility vehicles, including scooters, will only be allowed in urban areas, and that each device must contain “at least” one “luminous or retro-reflective element”; in other words, they need lighting at night.

It will be mandatory for scooter users to signal with their arms as these vehicles generally do not have turn signals. Finally, anyone using a scooter for work purposes is expected to wear a highly visible reflective vest.

The Spanish government has not yet indicated when these rules will come into effect, but once they come into force they will replace all regulations currently imposed by individual town and city halls.
