Secondary school

Michigan Tech has a new head football coach. Melissa Kuhar spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach at Drury University, an NCAA Division II school in Massachusetts. She played at the D-II level at Saint Joseph’s College in Indiana. Kuhar takes over from Bulut Ozturk as the third coach in the program’s history.

The Copper Country Twilight Baseball League begins play tonight…
• REL-Mohawk Technology faces Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker in the Driving Park.
• Northern Driveline takes on Garnet Garage on the Houghton field.

MLB

Jake Rogers hit two home runs as the Tigers defeated the Rangers 2-1 last night. Tarik Skubal pitched six innings and gave up the lone Texas run. Beau Brieske took the win in relief.

The Tigers continue that streak tonight in Texas. Jack Flaherty will pitch against Dane Dunning. Coverage begins at 7:40am on 99.3 The Lift.

Prospect Justyn-Henry Malloy made his Major League debut last night. He was called up after Spencer Torkelson was sent to Toledo to work on his batting. Buddy Kennedy was named for assignment to make room for Malloy on the 40-man roster. Detroit also released Keston Hiura, the former Brewer who signed as a minor league free agent this spring.

Detroit will retire Jim Leyland’s jersey number 10. The former manager will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame next month. The farewell ceremony will take place in August.

The Brewers suffered a 3-1 loss to the Phillies. After Jared Koening pitched the opening inning, Bryse Wilson took over. He gave up all three Philadelphia runs before leaving in the seventh. Rhys Hoskins homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers visit the Phillies again tonight.

Milwaukee’s depleted starting rotation is in danger of losing another member. Robert Gasser reported elbow stiffness after Saturday’s start against the White Sox. He is being evaluated. Pitcher Mitch White went unclaimed after being designated for assignment last week. He’s assigned to Nashville.

• The Ahmeek Fire Department trailed Bucko’s Party Store 5-4.
• Calumet One edged past Mohawk Superette 6-3.
